Comparative study on the nutrient recovery from source-separated urine using Magnesium-air fuel cell in different operating modes

To address the paucity of phosphorus reserves, on-site resource recovery from urine was a viable approach in line with sustainable development imperatives. In this context, an electrochemically induced precipitation system based on the principle of Mg-air fuel cells (MAFC), capable of precipitating NH4+-N and PO43--P as struvite from urine, offered an alluring prospect. Given the dilemma of the recovered struvite quality and insufficient Mg utilization in batch mode MAFC (B-MAFC), a continuous-flow mode MAFC (CF-MAFC) was proposed to facilitate struvite crystallization via regulating liquid flow rates. The hydraulic retention time (HRT), electrode distance (D), and external resistance (R) of reactor were optimized to enhance CF-MAFC performance. Orthogonal experimental results showed that under optimal operating conditions (HRT = 108min, D = 1cm, and R = 10 Ω), more than 98% of PO43--P could be recovered in CF-MAFC. The PO43--P treatment load of CF-MAFC outperformed B-MAFC by 1.32 times, with a 22.57% increase in Mg utilization. The mass percentage of struvite in the recovered precipitate exceeded 85%, and the total nutrient content surpassed 35.70%, fulfilling China’s compound fertilizer quality criteria. The study findings demonstrated that a continuous-flow MAFC held significant potential for the on-site resource-oriented treatment of urine.

A Framework for Sustainable and Green Finance Through Effective Trading Portfolio Management

This research paper responds to the growing global demand for environmentally and socially responsible financial practices by outlining a strong framework for incorporating sustainable and green finance into effective trading portfolio management. The study acknowledges the current difficulties of reconciling financial goals with sustainability criteria and uses a methodological approach that includes risk-sensitive asset allocation, mean-variance optimization, and strategic maximization of the Sharpe ratio. THE NEXUS OF LAW AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN SOUTH WEST NIGERIAN PUBLIC POLICY: A REVIEW OF MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES IN POLICY FORMATION

This research delves into the intricate relationship between law and sustainable development within South West Nigerian public policy context. The aim was to critically assess the multidisciplinary approaches in policy formation, particularly focusing on the interplay of law and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the region. Utilizing a multidisciplinary research methodology, the study examined a plethora of policy documents and legal provisions, underpinned by a comprehensive analytical framework. Results from the research highlighted the historical evolution of sustainable policies in South West Nigeria, emphasizing the pivotal role of legal frameworks in steering development. The study revealed the transformative nature of policy research and development in the region, influenced by both domestic legal paradigms and international sustainable development agendas. In conclusion, while South West Nigeria has made commendable progress in aligning its policies with sustainable development imperatives, there remain inherent challenges. These challenges, deeply rooted in the region's historical and socio-political fabric, necessitate a multidisciplinary approach for effective mitigation. Recommendations from this study underscore the importance of continuous stakeholder engagement, regular policy reviews, and fostering international collaborations. Such measures ensure that the region's policies remain attuned to the dynamic global sustainable development landscape, addressing the unique challenges and harnessing the opportunities inherent in South West Nigeria's development trajectory.

Convergence of educational technologies as an imperative for the development of innovation cooperation in the context of circular transformation

The object of the study is the process of convergence of educational technologies as an imperative for the development of innovative cooperation under the conditions of circular transformation. The central element of circular transformations is a person who must quickly react and adapt to changes in the external environment and solve management problems through systematic professional growth. This can be achieved thanks to the introduction of high-quality modern educational technologies, which require both special knowledge of the theory and practice of management, as well as personal development qualities. To achieve a state of sustainable development, managers making management decisions must quickly respond and adapt to changes in the external environment to solve various management problems. This requires systematic professional growth through the transition to high-quality new educational technologies. Combining the principles of global cooperation, defining the key imperatives of sustainable development and finding innovative measures of cooperation under the renewed conditions of the circular economy must be based on education. The main generally accepted indicator of the level of development of any country in the world is GDP. But under conditions of uncertainty and change, the real state of development and progress can be determined using the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), which is an integral indicator. One of the main issues is the determination of the level of sustainable development in the context of circular transformations, taking into account the influence of the level of education and existing approaches to its assessment. If we take into account that the conditions for cyclical transformations must occur, including through raising the level of education and the constant transfer of education into practice, then the inclusion of the Index of the level of education is necessary to calculate the real state of development of any country

How Should Urban Climate Change Planning Advance Social Justice?

Cities are struggling to balance the moral imperatives of sustainable development, with equity and social justice often ignored and negatively impacted by climate change mitigation and adaptation. Yet, the nature of these impacts on social justice has not been comprehensively investigated and little ethical guidance exists on how to better promote social justice in urban climate change planning practice. This article addresses the normative question: How should urban climate change planning advance social justice? It gathers empirical literature documenting the inclusivity and equity impacts of urban climate change planning and thematically analyses that literature for dimensions of social justice drawn from philosophical and urban justice theory. Study findings demonstrate that four characteristics of climate change planning in cities-underlying neoliberal ideology, unequal treatment, green gentrification, and exclusion from decisionmaking-comprise, create, or worsen social injustices across six dimensions. These characteristics are often interconnected and inseparable. Where neoliberal ideology guides urban climate change planning, the other three characteristics frequently occur as well. The article concludes by arguing that, at a minimum, urban planners and climate planners have an obligation of justice to avoid undertaking climate change planning that exhibits any of the four characteristics and to address injustices generated where planning has such characteristics. It further suggests that planners' negative obligations likely extend beyond this because the literature review revealed gaps in existing empirical data on the equity impacts of urban climate change planning.

Analysis of the relevance of the location of quarrying surfaces by using a multi-criteria decision support tool taking into account the sustainable territorial development (Case of Settat – Morocco)

The cohabitation between the material extraction activity and its receiving environment requires a conciliation between the three dimensions of sustainable development, namely the economic, social and environmental aspects. Given that the reasons for the existence of this extractive industry are economic, it feeds the pillar sectors of the economy (civil engineering, buildings ...) or, social it creates employment and contributes significantly to the revenue of local communities through taxes but it has disadvantages on the receiving ecosystem. The problem is to know how to make this sector a vector of economic development without compromising the environment in order to guarantee and ensure simultaneously economic growth and social equity and environmental protection and to make the territory more attractive and sustainable to investments in this field. Therefore, it has become necessary to take into account these three pillars when locating this activity. The said location is an essential decision, the fact of favoring one of the three aspects over the other aspects will undoubtedly have consequences on the environment where the activity is hosted (either more positive or more negative, conditioned by its choice). Indeed, the choice of quarry sites is a multi-criteria issue since we must reconcile the three imperatives of sustainable development which are often contradictory. In this sense this work has opted for a decision-making approach designed from a decision-making tool process of hierarchical analysis (AHP), said approach is based on the three axes of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental) which are subdivided into 16 criteria and apply on options (15 careers). The choice of criteria families, criteria and options was made while respecting the imperatives of sustainable development and according to their distributions and typologies at the level of the study area. Once these decision elements were identified, the attractiveness of the options on each criterion was evaluated, weighted according to the concerns and preferences presented by the decisionmakers and then aggregated by the AHP method in order to produce a hierarchy of the criteria and options. The implementation of this method allows for the evaluation of existing quarry operations in the study area and the forecasting of future optimization of quarry facilities

STATISTICAL ASSESSMENT OF THE REPRODUCTION OF LABOUR POTENTIAL IN THE CONTEXT OF ACHIVING THE PRIORITIES OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF BELARUS

The article presents an analysis of existing approaches to the assessment of labour potential. The advantages and disadvantages of practical application of the selected methodological approaches are indicated. The author substantiates and develops a method of quantitative assessment of the reproducrion of labour potential on the basis of a system of private and integral indicators, taking into account the established imperatives of sustainable development of the Republic of Belarus. This approach to the assessment of labour potential allows to get a comprehensive assessment of labour potential from the standpoint of achieving the priorities of sustainable development, to analyze its dynamics, to identify strengths and weaknesses of its development at each stage of reproduction. The obtained results can be used in the implementation and evaluation of the effectiveness of management decisions.

Regional management of sustainable ecosystem development

The article discusses aspects of sustainable development of the ecosystem of the region on the basis of a value-oriented approach declaring the provision of economic and social value. It is proved that the implementation of the sustainable development goals of the regions requires consideration of intersectoral processes to ensure policy coherence. A critical analysis of the approaches used in Russian and foreign practice to classify and evaluate regions according to the level of socio-economic development is carried out. The models of regional ecosystem management are proposed taking into account the imperatives of sustainable development, factors and indicators that determine the economic and social value of the equilibrium development of the ecosystem of the region are indicated.

Participation and Bridging: Involving Etrepreneurs in the Management of the EU Rural Economy

It has been proved that the implication of the European experience in the development of the rural economy in Ukraine is seen as a necessary attribute of the implementation of its ambitions to participate in the global process of sustainable development. It is emphasised that the asset of EU member states in forming the imperatives of sustainable development is to enhance the role and ensure the participation of all stakeholders in the management of the rural economy. The content of the stakeholder-oriented approach is characterised, and its imperatives in the context of agricultural management are identified. It has been substantiated that the stakeholders of rural economic development are any individuals, communities, groups, or institutions interested in the effective results of this process, which either directly affect them, or which they influence. Identified groups of rural development stakeholders: local government (public sector); business (private sector); household sector; non-governmental non-profit organisations (civil society). They influence or may be affected by decisions of any level of management hierarchy that should be taken into account under the conditions of configuration of their strategic orientations in mechanisms of management of the rural economy. To assess the degree and strength of the impact of stakeholders on the development of the rural economy, an appropriate matrix was formed, which allowed to determine their interests and possible strategic interactions in terms of key, secondary, supportive and passive groups of stakeholders. This is necessary to predict both the partnership and the competitive nature of cooperation, as stakeholders have (potentially have) different interests (economic, social, environmental, informational) and limited or unevenly distributed resources to implement these interests (financial, labour, intellectual, innovative, technological, informational, property, personnel, administrative, etc.). The profile of interests and influence of stakeholders on the development of the rural economy was built with a focus on the territorial community as an object of local impact. The mechanisms and features of attracting entrepreneurs as key stakeholders in rural economy management on the basis of bridging, the principles of which provide systematic, consistent, and well-established cooperation towards the implementation of common strategic objectives, interests, and goals of the rural economy. The possibilities of strategic partnership through the inclusive participation of all stakeholders in the implementation of projects and territorial development plans are outlined. The advantages of implementation in Ukraine of the European experience of attracting stakeholders in management of rural economy have been proven.

A Transdisciplinary Approach to Address Climate Change Adaptation for Human Health and Well-Being in Africa.

The health sector response to dealing with the impacts of climate change on human health, whether mitigative or adaptive, is influenced by multiple factors and necessitates creative approaches drawing on resources across multiple sectors. This short communication presents the context in which adaptation to protect human health has been addressed to date and argues for a holistic, transdisciplinary, multisectoral and systems approach going forward. Such a novel health-climate approach requires broad thinking regarding geographies, ecologies and socio-economic policies, and demands that one prioritises services for vulnerable populations at higher risk. Actions to engage more sectors and systems in comprehensive health-climate governance are identified. Much like the World Health Organization’s ‘Health in All Policies’ approach, one should think health governance and climate change together in a transnational framework as a matter not only of health promotion and disease prevention, but of population security. In an African context, there is a need for continued cross-border efforts, through partnerships, blending climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, and long-term international financing, to contribute towards meeting sustainable development imperatives.

Conceptual features of attribution of strategic plans of stakeholders of the construction industry

The article considers the strategic directions of construction industry development in terms of following the imperatives of sustainabledevelopment on the basis of production «greening».The research concerns the analysis of current transformations of activity of all construction complex stakeholders, including development of development companies strategic concepts.The preconditions for the development of ecobuilding and ways to implement it in Ukraine are considered, taking into account international experience.The systems of voluntary certification of construction products, which corresponds to the concept of "green construction", are described, thecriteria for evaluating finished construction products are given, and the reasons for the lack of certification of organizational and technologicalsolutions during construction are analyzed.The article analyzes the problems of ecodevelopment progress. One of the main reasons is the linear model of the economy, on the principlesof which the domestic industry continues to existfor the most part. The organization of sectoral relations on the principles of the circular model of the economy allows to follow the postulates of sustainable development, adopted by the governmentin the development strategy for the near future.Therefore, the development of bases for the collection, sorting and processing of waste, namely, construction waste, is not just a promising sector of economic growth, but a necessity for the development of the industry.The dependence between the efficiency of construction products of any period of its life cycle and the initial design decisions is given, the definition of a successful construction product in terms of achieving efficiency by each corporate member of the conglomerate is given.As a result of the comparison of the sustainable development goals with the basic principles of the circular model of the economy, the key directions of industry transformation on the way to the greening of production are proposed. In particular, the adaptation mechanisms and areas of launching a market for new services for development companies in various fields: fi-development, land development and surveying.

FEATURES OF ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY OF THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR: INFLUENCE ON LEADERSHIP POSITIONS IN THE ECONOMY

The purpose of the article. In the context of the search for strategies and algorithms to exit the global crisis, particular attention is paid to the development of industry and industrial policy. The agricultural sector has always been considered a priority and strategically important sector for Ukraine, which can meet not only the needs of the domestic market but also the world one. Methodology. To achieve the purpose of the article, a set of general scientific and specific methods of scientific knowledge has been used, in particular: abstract-logical (for substantiation of the research methodology, theoretical generalizations, formulation of conclusions); dialectical, historical-logical, analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction (for determination of the preconditions for ensuring environmental safety of products of the agricultural sector through the development of its innovative potential); statistical-economic (for assessment of the current state of development of the agricultural sector and identification of the factors that affect its environmental safety); strategic and structural-functional analysis (for correction of the strategic directions of the development of innovative potential of agricultural sector to maintain its environmental safety). Results. The formation of a targeted industrial policy aimed at satisfying the domestic needs for quality, environmentally safe food, taking into account the imperatives of sustainable development and environmental protection, should become one of the strategic directions for activation of leadership positions in the international agro-industrial market. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the peculiarities of ensuring environmental safety of products of the agricultural sector. Practical implications. The problems of ensuring environmental safety of the agricultural sector have been identified and the current state and the trends of agricultural sector development in Ukraine have been analyzed. It has been established that the use of imperfect technology and equipment in the food production leads to the introduction of harmful impurities into the final product or the formation of harmful substances during the production process, which, in turn, requires additional innovative measures to solve an actual problem. It has been substantiated that the enterprises of the agricultural sector are characterized by low innovation activity, which is a negative factor for ensuring environmental safety in accordance with world standards and leadership qualities. Value/originality. For increasing the leadership positions of the agricultural sector of Ukraine in order to ensure its environmental safety, it has been proposed to strengthen the effective interaction of all interested parties – the state, agricultural sector enterprises, agricultural producers and research institutions. Such interaction will allow achieving a synergistic effect, strengthening the common opportunities of all parts of domestic production in the creation of competitive technologies for the production of environmentally safe products and accessing to world markets.

The article presents author's approaches to the formation of the system of local imperatives of sustainable growth of Ukraine as a theoretical basis for the creation of an effective model of economic activity, equivalent to the ecological subsystem and aimed at restoring the generated capital. The aim of the article is the formation of conceptual bases of constructing of effective mechanism of resources management in the system of localization of sustainable development imperatives of business environment in conditions of post-crisis recovery of Ukraine`s socio-economic. The methodological basis of the research was the positions of classical and modern economic theory, works of domestic and foreign scholars on the issues of sustainable development, government regulation of the economy. The basic hypothesis of the research was the assumption of the necessity to limit and concretize the general world imperatives of sustainable development by narrowing their concept and expanding their content in accordance with the local context of development of the socio-economic system of Ukraine. Statement of the basic material. The results of systematization of objective limitations of implementation of the general imperatives of sustainable development have made it possible to identify relevant national imperatives. These local imperatives provide for the formation of: an effective model of economic activity, equivalent to an ecological subsystem and aimed at the recovery of generated capital and the creation of conditions for the transition to a post-industrial model; an institutional environment and a system of public administration aimed at ensuring the equitable distribution of resources both within the existing generation and between existing and future generations; exclusively economically oriented behavior of agents and overcoming exogenous resource dependence to ensure efficient distribution of endogenous resources over time with adequate consideration of natural capital. Originality and practical relevance of the research. The obtained theoretical and methodological concept has a theoretical relevance and can be transformed into an appropriate applied toolkit for sustainable development strategy formation. Conclusions. The existing system of localization of the imperatives of sustainable development of business environment creates the basis for forming the national strategy of sustainable development aimed at ensuring the integrity (existence) of the socio-economic system of Ukraine. Further research will be focused on the development of instrumental and methodological support of the business environment resource management system

AbstractThe Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN 2030 Agenda are today's global roadmap to sustainable development. Adopted in 2015, the SDGs are the culmination of 50 years of debate and consensus building on the imperatives of sustainable development. The 2030 Agenda explicitly calls for integrated methods for SDG achievement. Two multisector modeling frameworks have emerged to address integration in SDG policy: the system dynamics based Integrated Sustainable Development Goal (iSDG) model and the multimethod International Futures (IFs) model. Both are feedback rich and thoroughly integrated, and we term them as Integrated Systems Models (ISMs). ISMs enable quantification of policy impacts across SDG sectors, helping identify policies that benefit numerous SDGs as well as potential trade‐offs. These benefits have been witnessed in countries where these ISMs have been put to task on SDG policy. As the sustainable development paradigm becomes increasingly integrated, a central role is being created for further development of ISMs. © 2020 System Dynamics Society

Conceptual approaches and system-integrated management of business development model according to the sustainable development imperatives

Environmental integration in the European Union

The process of environmental integration in the European Union has explored. The main stages of the formation of a Common EU policy on environmental protection have been identified. It has shown that it was caused by the emergence of the first environmental problems in the EU in 1960-1970’s and their exacerbation. The development of this policy has been demonstrated on the example of the seven Environmental Action Programs (EAP). The main milestones of the formation of environmental integration have established. They are: the Single European Act (1986), the Maastricht Treaty (1992), the Amsterdam Treaty (1997), the Cardiff Process (since 1997). The peculiarity of the European environmental integration has revealed, in particular, the inclusion of the imperatives of sustainable development in the environmental policy and many directions of the domestic policy. It has concluded that the adoption of national strategies contributes to better coordination of sustainable development policies by integrating it into horizontal and vertical levels of the governance. The vertical and horizontal mechanisms of integration of sustainable development in the EU Member States have analyzed. It has been proved that the special feature of recent years was the establishment in some Member States the special structures responsible for the environmental integration, as well as taking into account environmental imperatives in the planning of financing their activities. It has concluded that environmental integration process has multi-level and multi-vector character although in different periods it had different speed and scale. However taking into account high priority of the environmental protection in the EU domestic and international policy it is worth waiting for further development of environmental integration in the European Union.

Can CSR help achieve sustainable development? Applying a new assessment model to CSR cases from Egypt

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to develop an assessment model for corporate social responsibility (CSR) that is interlinked to sustainable development and examine the model on CSR cases in Egypt, exploring whether CSR is embedded into the core agenda of the corporations. This analysis helps in understanding the state of CSR in Egypt and countries with a similar socio-economic background.Design/methodology/approachThe study presents a sustainable development assessment model for CSR, based on combining and modifying Archie Carroll’s model of Hierarchy of Corporate Responsibilities (1979, 2010) and Donna Wood’s Corporate Performance Model (1991) to include sustainable development imperatives. The proposed model analyzes two CSR practices of corporates. Qualitative analysis using in-depth interviews was conducted in the two case studies: a global multinational company represented in Egypt and a family business typical of many Egyptian corporates.FindingsGeneralizing from the results of the assessment in Egypt and countries with similar circumstances, most CSR practices in such a context still fall under philanthropy and few under human development or the business case. The lack of the formal institutional framework for organizing the role of the State in CSR promotion leads to missing the opportunity of linking CSR to the Sustainable Development Goals or similar strategies.Originality/valueThe paper presents a CSR assessment model adopted in developing countries, with a focus on incorporating sustainable development indicators since the 1990s. This methodological development since 2010 is timely and particularly useful for relating CSR to the recent global focus on sustainable development.

Imperatives of Sustainable Development from the Perspective of Systems Transdisciplinary Approach

The article provides an attempt to solve the challenges of attaining the goals of the final document “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” by means of the systems transdisciplinary approach concept and methodology. To achieve this, the author expands the existing concept of chemical evolution and describes natural mechanisms of directed transformation of the planetary matter. The article reveals the meaning of cyclic recurrence of development of supercontinents in geological history of the planet leading to the formation of the planetary matter required for further active transformation of biological objects, which are supposed to take part in that transformation. The author assumes and substantiates that stable development is controlled by the planetary and extraplanetary objective organizing compounds, which present effective mechanisms of appraisal and compulsion of objects of living and non-living matter to strictly definite results of activity and interactions. He shows the results of long-term and medium-term modeling of the development of modern society. The conclusion of the article describes the possibility of using methodology of systems transdisciplinary approach in organizing sustainable development since 2016.

MULTICULTURALISM AS THE MOST CONSTRUCTIVE APPROACH TO THE PROSPECTS OF CIVILIZATION

The purpose of this article is to rationalize human rights as a prevailing tendency in the development of modern society and governance. In particular, the main aspects of the problematic in their dialectical interconnection are actualized as well as the processes of formation of the principles of social interaction in the historical retrospective are outlined. Methodology. The general research strategy is based on the methodology of public administration: on the basis of historical, axiological and dialectical methods, cause-effect relationships between social processes and phenomena have been substantiated, the result of which has been the introduction of human rights methodology, including the concept of sustainable development. Scientific novelty consists in expanding theoretical representations of multiculturalism as the most constructive approach to the prospects of civilization. The role of informational and technological influences on society and government as well as the importance of protecting the universality of the information space, its integrity and openness are emphasized. It is consistently held that human rights create a powerful democratic potential for constructive change, development, and progress of society and governance on the basis of social interaction. Conclusions. It is substantiated that interconnection and interaction of human rights and sustainable development imperatives have a significant effect on the democratization of public life and ensuring the rule of law not only at the local but also at the national and global levels of government. It has been proved that the problem and tension between the universality of human rights and the cultural interconnection of identities in a multicultural world are manifested by the crisis in the contemporary world humanitarian space and specific approaches to its solution. Far controversial understanding of human rights by societies of different continents, confessions, traditions, and cultures, which has led to the denial of the cultural conditionality of human rights, has been established.
